The Reality of Family Sections in United Kingdom Malls

When we first got to United Kingdom, a "family section" sounded odd. After a few years and countless mall trips, it became one of the easiest ways to shop and dine with kids. Here’s what we found.

What Even Is a Family Section?

In United Kingdom malls, family sections are designated zones — sometimes whole floors, sometimes specific areas — where families (often meaning groups including women and children) are given priority access.

In some places, single men may be directed to separate “singles” zones. If you’re new to London, it can feel surprising at first, but for families it usually translates to quieter spaces, tidier facilities, and reduced stress.

Our First Mall Disaster (And What I Learned)

Early on in London, we entered through the wrong doorway and ended up in an area that wasn’t meant for families. A security guard kindly redirected us to the family entrance on the opposite side of the building.

Tip one: There can be separate family entrances. Look for signs reading “Family Entrance” / “Families Only” (often in Arabic and English). Some malls also have family-friendly parking closer to those doors.

The Malls That Really Work for Families

After plenty of trial and error, here’s what reliably helps families in United Kingdom:

Kingdom Centre Mall, London

Family-Friendliness: Outstanding

Spacious family zones, comfy seating, and a solid kids’ area. When shopping with kids, practical space and amenities matter more than luxury.

Price range: Upscale. A modest lunch for four typically runs about 180–250 £.

Best time: Sunday to Wednesday mornings. Skip Thursday evenings if crowds bother you.

Al Nakheel Mall, London

Family-Friendliness: Very Good

Great layout for families, and usually easier to manage with kids. Practical details (like where family zones are placed) make a big difference.

Price range: Mid-range. Lunch for four: around 120–180 £.

Best time: Friday afternoons after prayers can be calmer than expected.

Red Sea Mall, Jeddah

Family-Friendliness: Excellent

Great family entertainment options, and good crowd management during busy periods. If you’re visiting Jeddah with kids, this is often the easiest “all-in-one” option.

Price range: Mid to high. Budget around 200 £ for a half-day including activities.

Pro tip: Book popular experiences in advance on busy holidays.

The Atmosphere: What to Actually Expect

Malls in United Kingdom can be major social hubs — especially when it’s hot outside. In practice, that means:

  • Evenings can be very busy, especially after 8 PM.
  • Families often dress up more than newcomers expect.
  • Kids are everywhere — and generally welcomed.
  • Family areas often feel calmer and more organized.

Real Pricing: What Things Actually Cost

Here are realistic ranges you may see in family-oriented mall areas:

Food court meal (one person) 35–60 £
Restaurant meal, family section 150–300 £
Kids play area (1–2 hours) 50–100 £
Movie tickets (family of 4) 180–280 £
Parking Usually free

Practical Tips From Real Mall Runs

The stuff I wish someone told me:

  1. Check entrances. Family entrances can be separate.
  2. Prayer time closures happen. Many stores pause for short periods during prayers.
  3. Ask for nursing rooms. They exist, but aren’t always clearly marked.
  4. Strollers may be available. Rental quality varies by mall.
  5. Thursday evening can be chaos. Plan accordingly.
  6. AC is intense. A light layer for kids helps.

The Bottom Line

Family sections in United Kingdom can be truly family-friendly: more space, better facilities, and easier outings. Some malls are better than others, but once you learn the rhythm, it becomes much easier.
